Jesus Delivers Boy from Demons

And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to Him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son; for he is lunatic, and sore vexed; for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciple, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you?  How long shall I suffer you?  Bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief; for verily I say unto you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer & fasting.” (Matthew 17:14-21 KJV)

2 Chronicles 20:1-4

“Now it came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jephshaphat to battle. Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, there cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and behold, they be in Hezazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the Lord; even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.”
In this passage of scripture, Judah’s King proclaimed a fast for the entire nation – because they faced opposition unlike anything they had experienced before…

They were fighting against forces they could not defeat alone…

Their solution was – gather themselves together, TO ASK FOR HELP FROM GOD…

2 Chron 20:12 –

They realized they didn’t have the power;
They admitted they didn’t know what to do…

Israel undertook the task of rebuilding the temple of the Lord – after it had been taken by their enemies, burnt and broken down…

The task seemed unsurmountable – but here’s what they did, under the leadership of Ezra:

Ezra 8:21

“Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of Him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.”

As Israel sought to re-establish the presence of God – they gave themselves to a time of fasting – because they realized they needed:

To move in the right direction;
To raise their children in faith & obedience to God’s purpose;
Their economic situation to blessed by the hand & favor of God…

As Jesus was delivering a young boy from demonic influences that had literally taken over his life – and seemed to control his behavior – the strong influences that had taken root in this child’s life attempted to resist the power of God…

One account of this same story tell us that as Christ was casting out this devil, that it took the child and “tore him” (meaning – it tried to cause as much harm as possible before it departed); to the point that people thought the child was dead…

Moments later, the same child that seemed to be out of control was cured…

It was powerful & life-changing – the child was restored to the way God intended him to be.  But the disciples were confused as to why they couldn’t exercise God’s power and heal this child…

Jesus pointed to their lack of faith – and told them that all they needed was the smallest measure of faith & trust in God – to deal with the biggest  problems of life…

He told them that when they embraced their faith in God – that nothing would be impossible to them – then said that to move to that place in God, 2 things were essential – prayer & fasting!

Jesus taught them that day – that prayer & fasting changes the unchangeable – that it breaks the resistance of the devil – that it moves the biggest mountains!

There are times & seasons in your individual life – when you feel like Jehoshaphat (you are responsible for your family – the security, the safety & protection – their future); but it seems like you’re fighting more enemies than you can handle…

Then there are the “assignments” that God gives to us; when we have to lead the way in faith – to motivate and mobilize others to believe and trust God the way you do…

When the battle is bigger, or the challenge requires that everyone believe God – trust Him to get us through – or insure that we come out victorious – that’s when fasting & prayer transforms us – so that God can empower us to be – to do whatever this time in our lives requires!!

The scriptures teach us that we can do all things through Christ that strengthen us… (Phil 4:13);

And – that we are more than conquerers through Him that loved us (Romans 8:37).

But these victories over the devil – these transformative experiences that deliver us from destructive behavior – are the product faith that’s been tested, prayer that has prevailed, and fasting that has fortified the life of a child of God…

God told the prophet Isaiah to tell Israel – that He chose fasting:

To destroy the influences of wickedness & perversion;

(The twisted and used for the wrong purpose)

So that the burdens of life could be lifted off of those who cannot help themselves;

So that victims of oppression could be freed to discover their destiny – and hinderances removed from their path!

God chose fasting – to awaken in His people – the spirit of compassion, the gift of giving – and the power of impartation.

Lastly, fasting was chosen by God – as a means to reveal to you “what’s in you” – that stands in the way of your success, the breakthrough that’s meant to change your life!

Some things seem to be – after long struggles – after trying your best to overcome;

Unbeatable, unstoppable, unchangeable!!

But by the Word of the Lord – and by demonstration of the power of faith in God – and the sacrifice of self (through prayer & fasting)  Changes – The unchangeable!

When Desperate Times

At home – with your children

With issues & problems that won’t go away…

Call For Desperate Measures:

Do the unnatural – the unpredictable – the unusual!!

Get in the mindset of faith!

Believe there’s nothing God cannot do!!

NO mountain is too high – no problem too big!
